WNUR News Radio
Station Branding
Sweatshirt and beanie designs for WNUR, Northwestern University's student radio station. (Created as freelance work using Adobe Photoshop and Procreate, one-week timeframe in January 2022)
Project Brief
For this fast one-week-turnaround project, I was hired to create a two-color sweatshirt design and a one-color beanie design for Northwestern's WNUR News program that was inspired by punk rock and DIY aesthetics.
what I created
After some experimentation, I developed a hand-drawn typeface to provide visual consistency between the two designs. Along with the designs, I created the slogan "tune in and find out".
Takeaways
I found this project to be quite engaging as it was very open-ended; while the team had an aesthetic in mind, I had the freedom in the brainstorming stages to generate a huge variety of different imagery. It was challenging having few constraints to guide me, so I practiced working with self-imposed constraints - for instance, "make five designs with this typeface", or "make five designs with a planet and stars". In the end, providing myself with such prompts allowed me to generate far more ideas than I would have otherwise, making this project a valuable exercise in ideation.
Process work
Rapid-Fire Ideation
WNUR News was looking for a zine/punk poster/handmade kind of aesthetic, something reminiscent of self publishing, permanent marker, photocopy, and riso printed posters. After the first round of sketches, they expressed interest in the tagline "tune in and find out", the inclusion of a planet and stars, and a juice carton. Through a few more rounds of sketches, I developed these ideas into the final designs.
